“If I can’t say a word, then I’ll just wave my hand,” are the words to a legendary song sung by a choir that would express the goodness of God leaving Christians speechless. When you know that God works miracles in your life, you often can’t express it and the only thing that’s left to do is to simply, “wave your hand!”
The words in italics are directly spoken by Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, who has been temporarily silenced from the latest procedure on his vocal chords. This procedure was necessary due to another complication that arose because of his journey with stage four lung cancer. Although the voice of Rev. Fuzz has been silenced, his ministry and mission remains loud and clear!
Rev. Fuzz said: “At this time of year I’m most focused on trying to meet the needs of my neighbors. Thanks to what I call the precious members of Corinthian Baptist Church, I’m always able to help our neighbors. My church leaders like to say, ‘Pastor, what do you need us to do for the community this Christmas?’ This church is supportive of whatever ministry their pastor asks of them. Sometimes they say, ‘I don’t agree but if you say do it, we’ll follow our pastor.’ So this year, like in years past, we will identify a few community partners and their needs that our church can minister to.”
As Rev. Fuzz pastors his dedicated and trustworthy members, he clearly reminds them: “Our goal is to help someone less fortunate than ourselves. We can’t help everyone, but we can always help someone. At the Christmas season, we identify over 100 children to receive gifts from Santa—and 100 boxes of groceries will be distributed to them. In addition to Christmas day worship service, several Christmas fellowship activities will be held.”
Rev. Fuzz continues to minister to his congregants with a message that is loud and clear in his silence. He recognizes his situation is a part of the journey that still offers the opportunity to show God’s good news at Christmas. The simple thought of the good his deeds can work for others is just that kind of thing that renders the pastor speechless in God’s love—rather than speechless from surgery. “In the words of an old Negro hymn,” said Rev. Fuzz, “‘If I couldn’t say nothing, I’d just wave my hand.’ Merry Christmas!”
