On Saturday, November 2, the Nashville Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will hold their annual Freedom Fund Banquet, a Dinner & 105th Year Anniversary Celebration at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel – Downtown, 611 Commerce St, Nashville, TN 37203.
Tennessee State Senator London Lamar is the Keynote Speaker for this year’s Freedom Fund Banquet. Lamar is a Democrat and represents District 33 Memphis and Part of Shelby County. This year the theme is “All In: The Impact of Our Collective Power” and the event begins at 6:00 pm CST with a Meet and Greet Reception, followed at 7:00 pm with the Program and Dinner.
“I’m a proud third generation resident of Tennessee’s 33rd District,” Says Senator Lamar. “The 33rd district has remained the conscious of the legislature; fighting for our families and for our future. In Memphis, I graduated from Central ‘The’ High School in 2009 finishing top of my class. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with minors in Sociology and Intercultural Studies from Saint Mary’s College in May 2013. Accompanied by my resilient personality and self-motivated attitude, I decided really early on that I was committed to being a dedicated civil servant who inspires and motivates my peers to be an effective change agent for our futures and for our families.”
Lamar was unanimously appointed by Shelby County Commission to fill the vacant District 33 Senate position after serving two terms as State Representative District 91. Over her four years serving in the House of Representatives, she has introduced over 45 pieces of legislation and passed several bills into law. During that time, she passed bills that eliminate human trafficking, increase family healthcare and resources, reduce gun violence, expand voting rights and access, and increase job opportunities for Memphians in the State House and Senate.
“I currently serve as the State Senator for District 33, the youngest female and African American legislator in Tennessee State Senate History,” she says.” I am proud to serve as Chair of the Shelby County Delegation of State Legislators. I currently sit on the notable Judiciary and Energy Committees. I have passed numerous pieces of legislation in the State House and Senate with over 7 currently public laws.”
The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons. Their vision is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.
The annual Freedom Fund Banquet event is one of the major fundraising events held each year, allowing them to operate their office and keep the community informed so the community can hold the school board, the legislature, judicial districts, and the Metro Mayor’s Office accountable for what is happening to the people in our city.
The NAACP will remain vigilant in its mission until the promise of America is made real for all Americans. For more information about the Banquet or the organization, contact the Nashville Branch office at (615) 329-0999.
