The promises God makes to us extend beyond what God will do for us. They also relate to his character, God’s stability, and God’s disposition toward us. One thing that we can count on with God is the fact that God will never leave us. This is good news for someone who struggles with loneliness; who has ever felt abandon; or who feels like they are missing something in their lives. When people cannot be found, we can count on God’s presence. In Romans, Paul reminds us that we cannot do anything about God’s presence. Regardless of what happens in our lives, God will not leave us, and God will not forsake us. We are inseparable from God’s love. Paul writes: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Romans 8:38-39.
For Paul to be persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall separate him from the love of God, Paul had to experience these things, which have tried to convince him otherwise. Not only had he experienced these things, but he had to experience the presence of God’s love while going through these challenges. The reason why Paul was persuaded is revealed in verse 37 when he writes: “No in all these things, I am more than a conqueror.” He knew that it was love of God present with him, which made him victorious.
Many of us can testify like Paul that we have been through some crisis, some really bad stuff, which has shaken our faith and convinced us that surely we have been separated from the love of God. Often through the worst pain and let downs in our lives, we start to think and the devil tries to persuade us to believe that God does not love us and that God has forsaken us. The devil is a liar. We are inseparable from the love of God. If the devil can convince us that God does not love us, he will get the victory over us, and we will be defeated in our circumstances.
If a person starts to believe God does not love them, it can lead to depression, stress, addiction, and a life filled with misery. But no matter what we go through, we cannot give up on the truth—nothing shall separate us from the love of God. As long as we believe God loves us, and that we are inseparable from this love, we know that repentance, forgiveness, restoration, deliverance, healing, joy, and peace are all available to us—because we know that God loves us and that nothing can keep us from experiencing this love. We cannot even separate ourselves from this love.
God never gives up on us, even if we give up on ourselves. God is with us and everybody else. God’s love, Jesus Christ, just does not reside with certain people. The love of Jesus Christ is with everyone regardless of race, gender, religion, class, or any other difference or disparity. We are inseparable from this divine love. Even if we have fallen deep in sin, God still loves us. Even if the world has rejected us, God still loves us. Even if our flesh and blood or the one we promised to spend the rest of our lives with decides to leave us, God still loves us. We are inseparable.
I don’t know about you, but God and I are like red beans and rice; corn bread and butter; greens and vinegar; paper and a pen; Oreos and milk. We go great together, and we are inseparable.
