The Chamber East membership of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce has presented the Metropolitan Action Commission with a Beautification Award for the newly built Frederick Douglass Head Start Center located just off Main Street, which re-opened in February.

The original Frederick Douglass Head Start Center was completely destroyed by floodwaters and sewage during the historic 2010 Flood of Nashville. The building was completely submerged before the floodwaters began to recede.

Chamber East Chair Ashley Segroves and Alan Hayes presented the award to Metro Action to congratulate the agency for the successful completion of the new Head Start location and the agency’s service to the East Nashville community.

The unique features of Douglass are the outdoor learning areas attached to each classroom, a large covered outdoor play area and its design to conserve water and energy. Also, the building is tracking LEED-NC Silver certification.

The Frederick Douglass Head Start Center has 188 children ages 3-5 years old enrolled. The addition of two Early Head Start Classrooms will allow Metro Action to serve 16 infants and toddlers beginning this fall.

Metro Action administers the Head Start and Early Head Start program, an early childhood education program for children from birth to five, for Davidson County. The agency has 1,485 pre-school children and 72 infants, toddlers and pregnant mothers enrolled in seven locations and three partner locations throughout the city of Nashville.
