Debt relief, reparations for HBCUs, African Americans

The Save Tennessee State University Community Coalition and other community organizations in the Historically Black College and University family have come together to present distinguished guesses in discussing debt relief and reparations for the Black community and their historic educational institutions. The Nashville community is invited to engage in a discussion with Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) and Dr. Abdul Alkalimat of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; along with other local panelist. The events will include a celebration of another original keynote speaker, the recently deceased Mayor Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, Miss.

The purpose of these discussions is to work towards building a broad based coalition for self-determination and economic empowerment in Nashville’s Black community and HBCU family. Of special discussion will be the recent victory of the Maryland HBCU legal decision and its impact on TSU, Meharry Medical College, Fisk University, American Baptist College, and others.

There will be panel discussions with the beloved community on Tennessee State’s campus at the T. E. Poag Auditorium in the Humanities building, from 9-11:30 am on both April 24 and 25, as well as a Community Town Hall meeting 6 pm April 24 at Ray of Hope Community Church. The event is sponsored by the TSU Community Coalition (STCC), the Nashville Black Covenant Coalition (NBCC), Het-HERU sorority and HERU fraternity, and Southern Region-NCOBRA, Morgan State, university alumni/students, and the African American Cultural Alliance.
