The Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators will hold its annual Legislative Summit November 13-14 at historic Lane College in Jackson, Tenn.  bringing together state legislators, local elected officials, community leaders and residents to discuss pressing issues facing Tennesseans.

Sponsored by the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators Leadership and Education Foundation, the summit provides an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and help shape legislative priorities ahead of the General Assembly’s return in January.

This year’s discussions will focus on criminal justice reform and community safety; economic opportunity and business development; educational access and student achievement; healthcare disparities and wellness; and voting rights and civic engagement.

Tennessee Black Caucus Chair Rep. Jesse Chism of Memphis emphasized the importance of developing a unified legislative agenda.

“With so much taking place across our state and our country that directly affects African Americans, we are working to bring together leading voices and talent from across Tennessee to organize, strategize, and implement a unified legislative agenda with an emphasis on advancing and protecting Black Tennesseans that can also enhance the entire state,” Chism said.

Foundation President Joe Armstrong said the summit will give community members a direct voice in identifying legislative priorities.

“This is a way for legislators and the community to come together and truly hear what the community thinks that legislators should consider working on in the upcoming session,” Armstrong said.

He added that the foundation is committed to providing timely, relevant programming and encourages elected officials at all levels of government and community members to attend.

The summit will also recognize community leaders from across Tennessee for their contributions in various fields.

Registration is $100 for general attendees and $75 for students, with proceeds supporting student scholarships.

The event will take place at Lane College, 518 W. Forest Avenue in Jackson. For registration and additional information, visit <tnblacklegislativesummit.com>.
