McGruder Center holds Senior Expo

The 5th annual Senior Expo at the McGruder Family Resource Center, 2013 25th Ave. North will be held on Thursday, May 29. The community will gather from 10 am-2 pm at the McGruder Center as approximately 50 booths will includes information, health screenings, goods and services and door prizes.

The morning will begin with special entertainment by the Senior High Steppers.

The McGruder Family Resource Center is a collaborative effort between Matthew Walker Health Comprehensive Health Center, the United Way, and Metro Nashville Public Schools to strengthen the families in the 37208 area.

A statement from the partnership said: “The partners of McGruder are committed to ensuring that families and children are safe.”

During a recent 2013-14 year end and stocktaking and 2014-15 action planning meeting, the partners and those in attendance reviewed the many activities that were held during the past year.

“There are many of the activities that we enjoyed over the year that bring the community together,” said meeting facilitator Yolanda Vaughn, executive director of Neighborhoods Resource Center. “We want to do what we can to improve the amount of resources in order to bring all of the activities back again this year and to include some of the others that have not been done in a couple of years.”

Some of the activities include: Nashville Night Out Against Crime, Red & White Affair, Back to School bags, Toy Store, Resource Fair (Healthier Choices), Job Fair, Community Baby Shower, Zumba, Community Garden.

Other ongoing programs include: GED prep (Tenn. College of Applied Technology, Nashville), Teen Camp, fatherhood programs, parenting classes, women empowering groups, diabetes awareness (S.A.L.T.–Seasoned Adults Living Triumphantly), Metro social services, neighborhood resource, elderly adults program (Centerstone), MDHA, Alive Hospice, Girls Inc., DHS, Catholic Charities outreach and several others.

The C.E. McGruder Family Resource Center (FRC) is located at 2013 25th Ave. North under the direction of Tracey Henderson.
