This month is full of magnificent musical events at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center. There are several amazing concerts scheduled featuring African American singers and performers, along with other great musical talents. Prepare to be entertained by greats such as Johnny Mathis, The Four Tops, Victor Wooten, and Billy Cox, to name a few. Here’s a rundown:
The Four Tops
With their unbeatable string of hits (‘Baby I Need Your Loving,’ ‘I Can’t Help Myself,’ ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ and so many more), The Four Tops created the soundtrack for a generation. Don’t miss your chance to see these Motown legends with the Nashville Symphony, Vinay Parameswaran, conducting, Thursday, September 11, at 7 pm; Friday, September 12, at 8 pm; Saturday, September 13, at 8 pm.
Johnny Mathis with the Nashville Symphony
With his unmistakable voice, Johnny Mathis is responsible for some of the most romantic songs ever recorded. When he joins the orchestra for this one-night-only evening of musical magic, he’ll sing the songs you know and love, including ‘Chances Are,’ ‘Misty,’ ‘Wonderful! Wonderful!’ and more. He performs Sunday, September 14, at 7:30 pm with special guest Gary Mule Deer.
Victor Wooten
The Nashville Symphony hosts a groundbreaking commission written by Conni Ellisor and Nashville-based electric bassist Victor Wooten. A stunning showcase for Wooten’s distinctive style, ‘The Bass Whisperer: Concerto for Electric Bass and Orchestra’ will receive its world premiere at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, with Barry Scott as narrator. This all-American evening of music will also showcase the full orchestra, Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor, performing classics both old and new by Aaron Copland, John Adams and Howard Hanson on Thursday, September 18, at 7 pm; Friday, September 19, at 8 pm; and Saturday, September 20, at 8 pm.

Experience Hendrix
Celebrate the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix with an all-star roster of musicians including original Hendrix Experience bassist Billy Cox, blues legend Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes and more special guests to be announced. It’s an unforgettable night of music and exciting stage performances, all in tribute to the world’s greatest guitarist: Jimi Hendrix. The performance is Friday, September 26, at 8 pm.
End the month with a Free Day of Music Saturday, September 27, at 10:30 am, featuring the Nashville Symphony and 20 other performers throughout the day. It’s free!
