Gladys Knight has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, at age seven, she won the grand prize on television’s Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour.

Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, which include some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s singing with Gladys Knight & The Pips. Top 20 hits, like ‘Every Beat of My Heart,’ ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine,’ ‘If I Were Your Woman’ and the #1 smash hit ‘Midnight Train to Georgia.’

Knight also enjoyed success with the song ‘You and I Ain’t Nothin’ No More’ which appeared over the end credits of the critically acclaimed Lee Daniels film The Butler. She also sang the title song to the 1989 James Bond film License to Kill.

A humanitarian and philanthropist, Knight has devoted to various worthy causes, including the American Diabetes Association, for which she is a national spokesperson; the American Cancer Society; the Minority AIDS Project; amFAR and Crisis Intervention; and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honored by numerous organizations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gladys Maria Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She has been married to William McDowell since April 12, 2001. She was previously married to Les Brown, Barry Hankerson and James Newman. Gladys Knight is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.

Gladys has seven Grammys. In 1987 she won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ (Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder). In 2001 she won Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album for At Last. In 2004, she won for Best Gospel Performance for ‘Heaven Help Us All’ (Gladys Knight and Ray Charles). And in 2005 she won Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album for One Voice (Gladys Knight & Saints Unified Voices).

With Gladys Knight and the Pips she won three Grammys: In 1974, for ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ — Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus; and for “-‘Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)’ — Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. And in 1984 ‘Love Overboard’ won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
