Darryl Lynn ‘D. L.’ Hughley is an actor, political commentator, radio host and stand-up comedian. Hughley is best known as the original host of BET’s ComicView from 1992-1993, the eponymous character on the ABC/UPN sitcom The Hughleys and his performance in The Original Kings of Comedy. Additionally, he has been the host of CNN’s D. L. Hughley Breaks the News, a correspondent for The Jay Leno Show and a local radio personality and interviewer in New York City.
Hughley is from Los Angeles, California. He and his wife, LaDonna, have two daughters and a son. During his teenage years, Hughley was a member of the Bloods gang. He was expelled from high school before leaving that life and getting his GED. Thereafter, he eventually obtained employment with The Los Angeles Times. During 2005, he released a stand-up comedy album D.L. Hughley: Notes From The GED Section. He also had a short-lived talk show on Comedy Central called Weekends at the D.L. He’s had roles on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and on NBC’s Scrubs. He hosted the 2008 BET Awards. Hughley also served as special guest moderator of ABC’s The View for one day. He’s guest-starred on TBS’s Glory Daze and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire as well.
Crown Archetype Press published Hughley’s first book in 2012. He’s even appeared on Dancing with the Stars a couple of times. In the summer of 2009, The D.L. Hughley Morning Show premiered on WRKS (now WEPN), an urban adult contemporary station in New York City. His co-hosts included former BET news correspondent Jacque Reid. Airing from 6–10 am, the show placed Hughley in direct competition with his fellow King of Comedy friend Steve Harvey, whose nationally syndicated morning show airs in New York on WBLS.
D.L. is one of the most popular and highly recognized stand-up comedians on the road today. He’s also made quite an impression in the television and radio arenas. In 2013, REACH Media, the syndicator founded by Tom Joyner, finalized a deal with D.L. to host a nationally syndicated afternoon drive show, The D.L. Hughley Show, distributed by Cumulus Media Networks.
D.L. has undoubtedly proven himself as one of the hardest working men in showbiz. In addition to his growing TV and film resume, he continues his reign on the stand-up comedy front, filling up concert halls and headlining comedy clubs across the country.
