State Rep. Brenda Gilmore hosted her 9th annual Kites for Kids Health Day in Bicentennial Park. Over 600 children were in attendance, and there was no shortage of healthy, fun activities for them to participate in. When asked “why kites?” Rep. Gilmore replied: “most of our children these days have never flown a kite. In addition to getting them to move, it is a pleasure watching their eyes light up with sheer joy from the experience. It is different and a captivating experience for most”

The event initially began when she wanted to be proactive in aiding obese children. Tennessee is the 46th state, with the sickest children. Kites for Kids is a diverse solution for problem solving for kids.

The day consisted of people of all ages handling and flying kites. This consisted of kites of all sizes, shapes and colors, flying high with the Capitol as a backdrop for some.

There were puppet shows; line dancing; a one-mile fitness, fun walk; a one-mile fun run; a bouncy house; a fitness class (dance) led by Jen Yokley; and rope jumping. More activities and prizes included, face painting; an Easter egg hunt, with each child attending receiving a gift, medals, and an Easter egg basket. The kites, gifts, fresh fruit, prizes, medals and time devoted were all donated.

Channel 5 News Anchor Jonquil Newland was the guest mistress of ceremonies for the program. An array of vendors promoting healthy, safe living supported the event, including: Metro Health; the State Department of Conservation and Environment; the Tennessee Aquatic Project; Breast Preparation; the American Heart Association; and the American Diabetes Association. All of the vendors came equipped with helpful information, handouts, and gift items for kids (and adults). Fresh fruit was on their tables.

“It’s all about getting them to move and to promote healthy living and raise their fitness awareness,” said Rep. Gilmore.

Gilmore doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk—or dances the dance, as Bruno Mars’ 24 Carat Gold hit played in the background. Rep. Gilmore joined in with the other line dancers and didn’t miss a beat.

The 9th annual Kites for Kids Day was a phenomenal success and all in attendance had a good time.
