God gives more grace. “Wherefore He says, God resists the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble,” James 4:6.
Pride has many ways of showing itself. These include boasting, an arrogant attitude of ‘I know better than you,’ and a rebellious spirit of ‘I will not submit.’ Pride also come as an angel of light, clothed in false humility and self-righteousness that despises others. People display family pride, organizational pride (in their church/business), and national pride because they think their ways of doing things are best. Many say, “I am proud to be an American.” While it is good to appreciate one’s privileges, Americans must also remember “God resists the pride.”
One of our customs in America is to be proud of our children and grandchildren, proud of their success, accomplishments, schools that they graduated from, and careers they are pursuing. Others are proud of making a mark on society in governmental offices or being an owner of ones own business.
Have you ever stopped to think about the trap that the enemy brings to the proud? Satan tempts us all with the pride of life, with being proud of our wisdom or knowledge. Pride roots in our hearts with deceit and deception of wicked ways. It stirs up stuff and continues. It is not teachable, causes anger, raised voices, and hurt feelings. Pride quibbles over petty questions and strives to have the last word. It expresses itself in outward appearance through flashy clothes, trendy hairstyles, and shoes that draw attention. Many people wear such things to express their individuality or to distinguish themselves.
God’s solution for pride is to humble ourselves under His mighty hand, and to admit that He is right, and we are wrong. By submitting to God, we will receive “more grace.” “Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and depart from evil,” Proverbs 3:7. To resist the pride that the devil offers us is to turn to God and do His will.
Then we can draw closer to Him (God), and He will draw closer to us.Resist the evil one and he will flee from you. For God has promised strength for the day, rest for the labor, light for the way, grace for the trails, help from above, and undying love from above. Take a few minutes and ask yourself the question: ‘Am I walking in pride, or am I walking in humility before the Lord.’
