Faith of A Mustard Seed

Barbara A. Woods Washington, M. Div.

“And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.”  Isaiah 58:12 (RSV)

So, the work that is commenced by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber as a “Moral Monday Movement” in 2013 on the steps of the North Carolina Statehouse in Raleigh, has grown into a Revival of the “Poor People’s Campaign” begun by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his founding/leadership days of the “Southern Christian Leadership Conference”; NOW into The “Repairer of The Breach”!  At the .org website is a very precisely written statement of this ‘Prophet Isaiah’ driven Mission: “Repairers of the Breach is building a movement rooted in a framework that uplifts our deepest moral and constitutional values to redeem the heart and soul of our country. We are committed to building and supporting moral movements for social change and training a fusion group of people, activists, artists, and faith leaders to organize and mobilize around a moral policy agenda that prioritizes love, truth, and justice.”  I did say that I have enjoined my (name)faith to this Mission and have been following from state to state for several years now.  What a powerful journey it has been!

On April 17, 2023 Bishop Barber stood on the steps of the Tennessee Statehouse in movement to ‘Repair the Breech’ between the Tennessee Legislature and the People of Tennessee who began a Protest against COMPOUNDED EXTENSIVE Gun Law Legislation; in the wake of the Violent attack that killed Seven children and adults, to include the principal and Janitor of The Covenant School; and the dismissal of two African Americans elected as House Representatives.

First, is the understanding that 33 Senators make up the Tennessee Senate, Twenty-Seven (27) are Republican leaving a total of Six, count them (6) Democratic Senators present in the higher body of the Tennessee General Assembly.  Among “Dem 6” are Three Black Women, 1 from Nashville & 2 from Memphis.  With a current 2nd Legislation to “Redistrict” these two cities being held up by a Judge. I had watched the “night before elections” rallies held in several states where in the past ten years of this Movement, Dr. Barber has put before the people of that State, the most rawest statistics and details of the political and legislative realities in which we live in America.  Now to have him do this for Tennessee.

Politico in the wake of this “very bright light” now being shined on the Tennessee Legislature states:  “The world of politics experienced a collective shock this week as Tennessee Republicans expelled two young, Black, Democratic House members for protesting gun laws on the chamber floor after a deadly school shooting in Nashville.”  “The place has been defined by partisan vitriol, pique, scandal, racism and Olympic-level pettiness for years.”  “Protesters filled the halls week after week, year after year, calling for the removal of the bust of the Ku Klux Klan’s first Grand Wizard, a piece of art featured prominently between the House and Senate chambers.”

Bishop Barber submitted this to the Tennessean: “Extremists are using state capitols to make end runs around the U.S. Constitution and the heart of our democracy – from Mississippi, where extremists in the state House of Representatives passed a bill creating a separate, unelected court in the majority-Black city of Jackson; to Florida, where voter suppression is top of the agenda in the state legislature.  All across the country, and especially in the South, we’re seeing attempted political coups d’états.”

April 17, 2023 on the steps of the Tennessee Statehouse, Bishop Barber brought ‘prophetic fire’:   “We are here not as a Violent Insurrection, but a Moral Resurrection.  …Deeper than partisanism. …The politics of Lies and Greed and Death must be challenged by the moral vision of Truth and Justice and Love and Life.  …We cannot accept the “Public Policy Murder”; this “Policy Violence” as normal, anymore.  …The same people who Block Gun Laws, Block Healthcare.   …The same people who block Healthcare, block Voter Rights. …The same people who block Voter Rights, block Living Wage. …We are all in this together; so we got to get together. …It’s time to get on the Front Line.”
