RJ Mamula is not a politician. He is a working-class man who will fight to ensure that it is easier for Nashvillians to enter the middle class, not easier for mega-corporations to break ground.
RJ Mamula was born in Hammond, Indiana. He attended Purdue University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in History. He made Nashville his home in 2015.
Mamula is a member of Donelson Presbyterian Church and the Donelson Lions Club. RJ works as an Inventory Auditor for Under Armour Sport Equipment Company, and also as a tax professional at H&R Block.
Since coming to Nashville, Mamula has partnered with local charities, including Room in the Inn to help combat homelessness in our city. In 2021 he was appointed Secretary of the Davidson Democratic Party. The next year he was elected by the people of District 14 to serve as the Executive Committeeman. In these posts he has been an outstanding voice for the working class, pushing for higher wages, affordable housing, and programs to combat homelessness.
RJ on the Issues, in his own words: We must stop spending residents’ dollars on tourists and start investing tourist dollars on improving the quality of life of residents. I oppose spending taxpayer money on new stadiums and tax abatements for corporations. If corporations want to invest in our city, they must use their vast wealth to do so, they do not need our taxpayer dollars. Investing in the needs of the people first is what will benefit everyone in the long run.
In the wealthiest country in the world, and in one of the fastest-growing cities in that country, we should not have nearly 50 people a year dying on our streets. Homelessness is a deadly issue. It is unknown exactly how many homeless people reside in the Nashville area, but we all know that the number is growing. Homelessness should not be a social punishment for other societal ills. As a city we must focus on housing this population. We must partner with charities such as Rescue Mission and Room In The Inn to increase access to job placement and housing for the homeless population. We also need to increase funding of the Barnes Fund and cut the red tape that is making it hard for affordable housing developers to do business in Nashville.
We need to usher Nashville into the future and make our city designed for people and not for cars. We must ease traffic, reduce pollution, lower the cost for people to commute to work, and reduce the need for parking garages to make space for better use. I will make investing in public transit a priority. Specifically, I plan to revitalize Briley Parkway to reduce congestion in the district.
