Expressions of faith

Explore how Peter's sermon in Acts 1:16 reveals the Holy Spirit's prophecy about Judas Iscariot, the need for apostolic replacement, and the divine plan fulfilled through faith, commitment, and the promise of God's Spirit.

Bishop-Elect Dr. Monterey D. Lee, Sr.

“Peter stood up and said, brothers and sisters, men and women, in the scriptures the Holy Spirit said through David, something that must happen involving Judas,” Acts 1:16.

Peter uses this common greeting that is often used by the apostles when addressing the Jews and Christians to acknowledge their shared love for humanity and the fellowship that we share in Jesus Christ and His word. When the Holy Spirit speaks, it will reveal what will come to pass from the prophets in the Old Testament. Peter is emphasizing that the event involving Judas (the one that was paid to turn Jesus over to the Roman chief priests and elders for 30 pieces of silver). ‘You betray; we will pay you for your greed with the price you placed on Jesus’ life.’ This is not a random event but rather the fulfillment of a prophecy. This pre-ordained event spoken of by David was from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was speaking from the mouth of David concerning Judas. It was all part of God’s divine plan.

“As a fulfillment of prophecy regarding Judas Iscariot’s betrayal, let the days be few and let another take his office,” Psalm 109:8.

This quote highlights the need to find a replacement for Judas among the apostles. The replacement or the elected one who was chosen was Matthias. You will become an apostle of Jesus Christ and carry out the theological framework for understanding this call. You must be one to fulfill the prophetic scripture of Psalm 109—someone that is committed and faithful to God. This lifestyle of commitment is unto God for the saving of souls. This is why the gift of the Holy Spirit was the promise of God and for the apostles. I will give you my spirit and choose the replacement [servant] for my will to take place. My Holy Spirit is a witness to what was spoken by David and is now coming to pass, coming to life. My will must be fulfilled now; we don’t have time to waste. Can God trust you, or do you need to be replaced?
