Expressions of faith

Spiritual care and self-care build emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being, enabling us to maintain a relationship with God and serve others with renewed strength and purpose.

Bishop-Elect Dr. Monterey D. Lee, Sr.

As the people of God, we have moved from the place of outpouring to the place of spiritual care.

“Let us not be weary [become discouraged or lose heart] in well doing [doing good, acting noble, or doing right], in due season [the proper time, the appointed season] we will reap a harvest, if we faint not [if we do not give up],” Galatians 6:9.

Doing good involves yielding to the spirit and exhibiting [manifesting, displaying, and having a quality of good behavior] the fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us.

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such, there is no law. For we are in Christ and have crucified the lust of the flesh. We live in the spirit, we walk in the spirit. We don’t provoke one another, or envy one another,” Galatians 5:22.

Their is no vain glory, i.e., pride or excessive vanity. The fruit of the Spirit gives strength to the weary and increases power to the weak. This is why we have faith in the Lord for renewed strength. We cannot make it on our own; this is why no one is totally independent and doesn’t need God’s help. God is desirous is for you to feel close to Him by building a personal relationship.

God establishes a relationship with us so we can express ourselves to Him for guidance in our daily walk. We need spiritual care and counseling throughout life’s journey.

Spiritual care: As the people of God it is important that we look after our spiritual well-being and, our spiritual self-care. That involves spending time with family, meditating, reading the word, spending time in nature, praying, and physical activity.

This will build you spiritually, emotionally, and physically—rebuilding relationships and regaining a sense of spiritual well-being. If you don’t give yourself spiritual care, how can you give it to others? This is why we have Jesus Christ as our example. He will enable us to look after ourselves and then others.

“When He had fasted 40 days and nights, He cared for others,” Matthew 4:2.

“When He had sent the multitudes away, He went up into a mountain to pray for help in how He should see after others,” Matthews 14:23.

Spiritual self-care: Do for others but you must first see after yourself. So don’t be weary in well doing, because in due season you will reap if you faint not.

“And when you have the opportunity, do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith,” Galatians 6:10.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light,” Matthew 11:28-30.

Self-care is a process of taking care of oneself with behaviors that promote good health.

Spiritual care is needed. It’s a part of your everyday engagement. The food that we eat, the choices we make, exercising, and sleep are vital parts of your self-care. As the children of God, we must live healthy, eat healthy, get enough sleep, exercise daily, do something you enjoy every day, have spiritual activities, and avoid drugs and alcohol.

Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with God and self so that you can enjoy good feelings—good feelings that we can give to others. Remember you cannot give to others what you don’t have yourself.

Self-care builds you emotionally, physically, socially, practically, mentally and spiritually.
