The MDHA Resident Associations hosted a reception to announce Peaches Manning Scholarship recipients at July 7 at 1419 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.
Rep. Brenda Gilmore and Councilwoman Erica Gilmore along with MDHA Executive Director Jim Harbison honored the four public housing scholarship recipients and the late Peaches Manning. Family members of Manning also attended.
The reception featured the Music City Middle School All Star Performance Band, made up of public housing children.
Recipients included:
• Demarco Latrell Jackson is a resident of J. Henry Hale Apartments and a 2016 graduate of Lead Academy High School. Jackson received a full athletic scholarship to Coker College in South Carolina.
• Lavelle Myles Kinnard of Cayce Place is a 2016 graduate of Stratford High School. He will attend Lane College in the fall on a full band scholarship.
• Kennedy Augusta Patterson of Edgehill Apartments was raised by his father who said: “I would not trade him for anything in the world.” Patterson is a 2016 graduate of Hillsboro High School. In the fall, he will begin his college career at Nashville State Community College.
• Destiny Zahne’ Rainer of J. Henry Hale Apartments is a 2016 graduate of MLK, Jr. Magnet High School where she participated in many sports activities. Rainer will attend The University of Memphis in the fall.
Manning, a longtime community liaison for the Metropolitan Development and Housing Association, passed away January 3, 2015. She was 78.
