Independence holiday weekend in Nashville was spectacular and was celebrated by many. The numerous guests were treated to a memorable feast, music to dance by, and an unexpected tribute from Tennessee State University’s Alumni Relations team. This was sanctioned by Dr. Glenda Glover and presented to the group’s President Frank Pillow by Cassandra Griggs, director of TSU Alumni Relations and the entire TSU Family for recognizing their unyielding support and commitment to TSU’s football team.
Each year, the staunch all men’s group known as the ‘Untouchables’ puts on a feast that would rival any buffet spread. There are fresh hot fish, hot dogs, hamburgers, fresh French fries, cold drinks, (and for those old enough to responsibly indulge) cold beers. The men run the event like a well-oiled machine. From the time each guest pulls in, they assure that parking passes are checked and the vehicles are safely parked. Once the guests are in the party zone, they line up for the tasty aforementioned food and drinks.
The group’s President Frank Pillow proudly shared their legacy and provided a personal tour of the event grounds and introduced his core team. It’s a humbling experience to experience and sees the hard work and pride put into all facets of the weekend. We watched as the men manned the actual pig roasting. Yes, there were two whole hogs being roasted separately in their own deep leveled brick roasting pits unseen before by this writer’s ‘Yankee eyes.’ The boys candidly laughed it off and allowed us full viewing privileges.
The pigs are thoroughly cleaned beforehand and prepped the night before. They are seasoned and succulently cooked. This took place on July 3, and as fragrant smoke arose from the hog pits guests mixed and mingled and enjoyed the food and music.
It was a family atmosphere providing safety and structure, all slated to enhance one of the best events of the summer.
Fifty-eight years of serving the community and leading by example, the groups of men from various walks of life proudly carrying the name Untouchables remain distinguished and reliable to each other and the people whom they serve. After a debriefing of their 2016 event, plans will begin for 2017.
