Although most people were already fans of her, Nashville’s City Winery’s artist last weekend became a crowd favorite very quickly! There, on stage, was this singer with an amazing voice, Su Charles, a.k.a., SUCH. An R&B singer, songwriter, daughter of Haitian immigrants, Charles grew up singing in the children’s choir in her father’s church. She was selected to join the Grammy High School Jazz Ensemble and felt like this is what she wanted to do in life. But at 15, she still had school and studies to concentrate on. She earned degrees in physical therapy and nursing. Then she put her training to effective use and flew to Haiti to help care for the victims of the 2010 earthquake. Being there brought her back to her actual passion: music.
SUCH re-started her career as a contestant on American Idol. She is not just listened to in the U.S. but also has a solid following in the U.K. where she spent several consecutive weeks atop the Soul Charts, and in Africa where she won the All-Africa Music Award (Africa’s equivalent of a Grammy).
Among the many songs she sang were some of her most beloved songs: ‘Sugar Maple,’ and ‘Heaven.’ She also performed ‘Before Dark,’ which is a top 40 single on the Urban Adult Contemporary chart. SUCH oozes with the growing self-confidence of a woman who knows what she wants and how and when she wants it. Also, don’t forget her latest album, Wide Nose, Full Lips.
Not only does SUCH have a great voice, but she is also a great performer. She shared the story behind each song. She also interacted with the crowd by including them in the singing. After singing her originals, she did covers for some other hits like Estelle’s ‘American Boy’ and ended the very entertaining show with Fuji’s ‘Killing Me Softly.’ At this point, every person on the floor was humming and singing along.
SUCH has also earned the Broadway World Best Actress and Best Acting Debut Awards for her role as Celie in the stage adaption of The Color Purple.
As a person, she is kind and funny. She cannot go a day without acknowledging how grateful she is for all her accomplishments and what life has given her. She doesn’t have a vigorous routine, but exercise plays a big part—something she must do daily to stay focused on important things.
