Though the final results will not be confirmed for weeks, Zohran Mamdani stunned many political observers to come out on top of a crowded field of candidates in the Democratic New York City primary.
The New York City mayoral race was a predictably competitive contest on one hand and on another it became an effort led by New York Attorney General Tish James to stop former Gov. Andrew Cuomo winning elected office again.
The political rivalry between the two was cemented when James investigated then-Gov. Cuomo in 2021 for sexual harassment and then attempted to run for governor herself in what would be a failed effort.
While that side-story continued, a larger story emerged as Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, 33, won the support of young voters in New York. Mamdani also appears to have earned the votes of many in New York who have grown increasingly tired of living in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. where a ‘billionaires row’ of ultra-luxury residential skyscrapers near Central Park exists in Manhattan.
Mamdani has pledged to have state sponsored supermarkets and fast and free transportation. On primary night in New York against a competitive and diverse field of challengers, Mamdani’s pledges and promises appears to have worked. He was selected by a majority of New Yorkers with over 40% of the vote, though he did not get over 50% of the vote in a primary that utilizes ranked-choice voting.
Cost of living issues and the problem of expensive rents and housing prices in New York clearly resonated with voters. Mamdani spoke directly to the issues constantly and appealed to voters to walk away from the past. He appears to have successfully branded Cuomo’s style of politics as the reason New York has become economically prohibitive.
Mamdani’s main opponent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded the race, even though the final ranked choice math has not been completed. The former governor could still be on the ballot in November. But he was clear in his words of congratulations for Mamdani.
“Tonight was not our night. Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night. He put together a great campaign, and he touched young people and inspired them and moved them and got them to come out and vote. He really ran a highly impactful campaign. I called him, and I congratulated him. I applaud him sincerely for his effort, and let’s give him a round of applause and thank him for his campaign,” former Gov. Cuomo said from his campaign office in downtown Manhattan.
Though Mamdani trailed Cuomo in most polls, the excitement around him was clear to many and seen in the number of people attending his events. Mamdani was also a media darling. He was constantly seen on MSNBC for interviews and appeared on the Stephen Colbert Show this week.
Current Mayor Eric Adams will run as an independent and will be on the ballot in November—but he is not expected to be competitive.
