The 95th Annual Spring Arts Festival will be held at the historic HBCU from Monday, April 1 through Sunday, April 7, 2024. This year’s theme is “Inseparable: Visual & Performing Arts and Fisk – Part of the Intellectual Fabric of the Institution.” During the festival week, the Fisk Galleries will welcome back the Alfred Stieglitz Art Collection from Crystal Bridges.
The Festival kicks off on Monday with “GO Poetry – On The Lawn” and a Voice Studio Recital, 8 p.m., in the Appleton Room of Jubilee Hall. Go Poetry is a Spoken Word student organization, and they hold open mic events. Professor Gwendolyn Brown teaches voice lessons for the vocal performance majors; this is her students’ recital.
Tuesday features a Fisk Jazz Ensemble Performance on the Yard, 12 Noon, Outside of Spence Hall. A Fisk Music Department Showcase Concert, featuring the Fisk University Band, Fisk Jazz Ensemble and Fisk University Choir, follows at 7:00 pm, in the Fisk Memorial Chapel.
“Parallels of Art and Science” will be presented at 10:00 am Wednesday on the 3rd Floor of the Library by Dr. Kent Wallace, Chair of Graduate Studies and Professor of Physics; his lecture is a demonstration proving there are parallels between science and art. Wednesday at 12:00 Noon, Julian Garrett, student chef will treat the campus to his culinary skills in the Multipurpose Room of Spence Hall.
Thursday, the Student Art Show in the Lower Level of the Carl Van Vechten Gallery runs from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Check with the Gallery, as they may be unveiling the return of items from the Stieglitz Collection from Crystal Bridges in the Upper Level gallery. The Gallery is located at the corner of DB Todd Jr Blvd and Jackson Street, open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm; call for specific information at (615) 329-8720. At 6:00 pm, the Stagecrafters Student Playwrights One-Act Play Fest begins in the Little Theatre; admission $5.00.
Friday, from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm in the John Lewis Center for Social Justice, there will be a Panel Discussion with Joanna Soderberg, Moderator. The topic is “Tracing the Impact of Colonialism: From Historical Archives to the Debate on Reparations.” Again that night, at 6:00 pm, the Stagecrafters Student Playwrights One-Act Play Fest continues. Khalil McCarthy’s Senior Recital is at 8 p.m., Appleton Room of Jubilee Hall.
Saturday, the Stagecrafters Student Playwrights One-Act Play Fest concludes at 6:00 pm, followed by Zoe Frazier’s Senior Recital, at 8 p.m., Appleton Room. The 95th Annual Spring Arts Festival concludes on Sunday, April 7, with a Gospel Explosion in the Fisk Memorial Chapel at 3:00 pm.
